Animal Welfare Foundation thanks Shire Insurance Services for their kind support….

Shire kindly hosted a corporate day at Cheltenham festival this year, with representatives attending from a number of veterinary practices, Cotts Farm Equine, Lambert Leonard & May and Hambleton Equine were amongst the guests. It was a fantastic day, with all the thrills and spills you would expect from the time honoured festival.

After a fantastic meal we were delighted to still have some money in the kitty by the final race. The group decided to put all of the remaining £660 kitty on Mister Whitaker ridden by Brian Hughes and trained by Mick Channon.  It was a nail biting race, Mister Whitaker (13-2) won by a head on a photo finish against Rather be.

We were delighted to end the day on a high note and pledged to donate the £660 winnings plus an additional 50% bringing the total to £990 to the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) to support them in their quest to improve the welfare of animals.

AWF is a small vet-led charity that was set up in 1983 to improve animal welfare through funding research, supporting veterinary education, providing pet care advice and encouraging debate on animal welfare issues. The charity is supported by the British Veterinary Association (BVA), the leading representative body for vets in the UK.

Chris Laurence, AWF Chairman, welcomed Shire’s support: “We are grateful to receive this donation from Shire Insurance Services and their guests. As a small independent charity, support from organisations such as Shire is vital in enabling us to carry on our work in improving animal welfare”
